The first O Antiphon is chanted today in the Church’s Liturgy at Vespers. It goes thus:

O Sapientia,
quae ex ore Altissimi prodisti,
attingens a fine usque ad finem,
fortiter, suaviter disponensque omni:
veni ad docendum nos
viam prudentiae.

Here is a translation of that beautiful text:

O Wisdom,
which have come forth from the mouth of the Most-High,
reaching from one end [of the world] to the other,
strongly, sweetly ordering all things,
come and teach us
the way of [divine] prudence.

Prudence is what orders all things rightly to their proper end. It is what keeps order in the world, and also in our souls. It is what allows man to choose things that are properly disposed to his final end, and thus in accordance with the Will of God. From God’s perspective, prudence is that by which He guides all things wisely and justly to their proper end, which is nothing less than God Himself! It is through prudence that God directs all things to Him, for we all came from Him, and we all must return back to Him.

Come, O Lord Jesus, Wisdom from on high, and teach us the way of Divine Prudence!
